Broken Links

What are broken links in SEO?

A broken link is a link on a web page that does not take the user to the intended page if they clicked on it. This could be because the web page no longer exists, or it is on a new URL without a 301 redirect, or the website no longer exists.

Over time, links to internal pages and external web pages will start to break. This process is known as link rot. This makes it important to have a process in place to check that your internal links are always working and not succumbing to link rot.

You should also check any external links in blog posts when you update your content.

When you find broken links on other websites this presents an opportunity for you to contact the website and suggest your web page as an alternative. This is known as broken link building.

Broken link building used to work quite well but as with most outbound link building strategies, it has reduced in effectiveness as website owners are more aware of the value of linking to other websites.
